Over the last month I have received a few emails from fellow Inventor users trying to access older episodes of the Official Inventor Podcast. If you are using iTunes you can easily get all the episodes from there - just do a search for "Official Autodesk Inventor Podcast" and download the episodes you are interested in.

If you want to download older episodes from Internet Explorer, I made a few changes to the podcast page and have re-posted it.  All you need to do is select the following link from Internet Explorer and select the episode you would like to listen to. You can also right click on the episode and "save target" to save it on your computer for later.

The first thirteen episodes are audio only - we started the video portion from episode 14 - 23.

New skill builder posted (Spur Gears)

Spur Gears Part 2: Learn How to Design and Calculate Spur Gears

If you haven't taken a look at the Inventor Service and Support site for a while, you will probably be surprised to see a wide range of How To's and Skill Builders that range from parts and drawings to design accelerators and simulation. Head on over to the How-to Articles to see if something catches your eye. The most recent post is part 2 of creating spur gears.

Spur Gears Part 2 Optimize your processes by learning some typical workflows for designing and calculating spur gears for specific parameters (power, speed, and gears ratio).  While you’re at it, if you haven’t already worked through Part 1, which covers how to create spur gears with known dimensions, give that one a try too.

Inventor View 2009 is here

For those of you that would like to share native Inventor data without the need export, Inventor View is now available for Inventor 2009 files. Inventor View will allow you to Share native Inventor data with non-Autodesk Inventor users with this freely distributable viewer that delivers high-fidelity viewing and printing of parts, assemblies and drawings.

If you would like others to be able to view your Inventor models, point them to the viewer site to download Inventor View.

Back from the St. Louis User Group

This week I attended a user group meeting in St. Louis (SLAMSUG) and had a great time covering some of the new features in Inventor 2009. I was a little worried that I wouldn't make it due to a long delay in Chicago but I was able to show up right before it started.

I was able to show many new enhancements in Inventor 2009.

• Sketch enhancements (constraints, trim/extend, text along arc and imported splines)
• New substitution for large assemblies
• Sheet metal enhancements (multi edge mitering, styles, corner overrides and large radius bends)
• Drawings enhancements (crop view, display interfering edges, COG, part list filter, sub/super script)
• Simulation (analyze spur gears, mobile groups and integration with studio)
• Studio (Depth of Field, soft shadows, video compositing and animate camera along path)
• Frame Generator (create custom profiles and new selection types)

 

This is just a quick list of what we covered in the two hour user group. I had a great time and as always received some great feedback for future enhancements.

There are user groups in many areas that often help Inventor users learn and share new ideas. If you don't presently attend a user group, I would encourage you to see if there is a local user group in your area and attend it from time to time to see whats out there.

Take a look at the various events in the Manufacturing Portal to see whats in your area.

 

Running of the horse

Without knowing you have probably seen this mechanical horse in several Hollywood productions. The most recent was in  Super Bowl XXII where Shaquille O’Neal is a jockey in a horse race, ultimately winning by “his own” nose.

The horse was initially designed for The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and has had an appearance in other Hollywood titles.

Datum3 had to design and ship a lifelike mechanical horse in 21 days and needed to be as creative as possible to pull off the deign. Datum3 created a digital prototype of the horse using Inventor then manufactured and assembled it in just seven days.

It's hard to believe but here is episode 23 of the Official Inventor Podcast. This episode we cover custom frames for Frame Generator as well as some parameter and drawings tips. They all go together well for a 15 minute podcast so take a listen and I hope you find something of use.

Autodesk Announces Intent to Acquire Moldflow
